Bathroom Vanity Materials Explained: PVC vs. MDF vs. Chipboard
When shopping for a new bathroom vanity, the style and colour often get the most attention. But the material it's made from is the single most important factor for its longevity. The UK's damp and humid bathroom environments are notoriously tough on furniture.
So, what’s the real difference between the most common materials, and which one should you choose?
What is MDF (Medium-Density Fibreboard)?
This is the most common material for bathroom furniture. It's made by breaking down hardwood or softwood fibres, mixing them with wax and resin, and pressing them into dense panels.
- Pros: Inexpensive, smooth finish (great for paint), strong and dense.
- Cons: It is highly susceptible to water damage. Like a sponge, if moisture gets past the outer paint or laminate layer (which it often does at seams and edges), the MDF will swell up. This damage is irreversible.
What is Chipboard (Particleboard)?
Chipboard is even cheaper than MDF. It's made from wood chips, shavings, and sawdust all bonded together with resin. It's almost always covered with a laminate or vinyl foil.
- Pros: Very low cost.
- Cons: Extremely vulnerable to water. It swells, crumbles, and delaminates even faster than MDF. It lacks structural strength and is generally considered a low-quality material for a high-moisture area.
What is 100% Waterproof PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride)?
PVC is a type of solid, rigid plastic. Unlike MDF or chipboard, it contains no wood fibres or particles at all.
Pros:
- Completely Waterproof: This is its greatest strength. PVC is a non-porous material, so it simply cannot absorb water, swell, warp, or peel.
- Exceptional Durability: It's resistant to humidity, temperature changes, and is incredibly tough.
- Easy to Clean: The smooth, lacquered surface is hygienic and easy to wipe down.
Cons: Can be more expensive to produce than chipboard or MDF (though the value is far greater long-term).
