A Buyer's Guide: How to Spot a Truly Waterproof Vanity Unit (Don't Be Fooled)

In the UK, water-resistant and waterproof are two very different things, especially when it comes to bathroom furniture. Many vanities are labelled as "suitable for bathrooms," but this often just means they have a thin layer of vinyl or paint over a standard MDF or chipboard core.

As we've seen, once that layer is breached, the unit is destined to swell and fail.

So, when you're shopping, how do you spot a truly waterproof unit that will last? Here’s a 4-point buyer's guide.

1. Check the Core Material. This is the #1 rule.

Weak Materials: If the description says the core is MDF, HDF, chipboard, or particleboard, it is **not** waterproof. It is water-*resistant* at best. These materials are made of wood fibres and will absorb water like a sponge if it gets past the outer coating.
Strong Materials: Look for terms like 100% waterproof PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride), solid surface, or stone resin. These materials are non-porous. They have no wood fibres to swell, meaning even if the surface is scratched, water cannot get in and cause damage.

2. Look Inside the Cabinet.

A common cost-cutting trick is to only treat the *outside* of a vanity. Open the doors and drawers.
Weak Materials: Is the inside a different, raw-looking material (like white melamine or plain chipboard)? This is a major weak point.
